Complete Gokyo Lakes trek packing list for 2026 — sleeping bag ratings for 4,790m, down jacket fill power for the Gokyo Ri sunrise, permits, and how cold it really gets at the lakes.

Why the Gokyo Lakes Trek Demands Serious Gear

The Gokyo Lakes trek is the Everest region's quieter, arguably more beautiful alternative to the classic Base Camp route. It climbs to Gokyo village at 4,790m on the shore of Dudh Pokhari (the third lake), with the pre-dawn ascent of Gokyo Ri at 5,357m delivering one of the finest panoramas in Nepal — four 8,000m peaks including Everest, plus the turquoise Ramsar-protected lake system and the vast Ngozumpa Glacier. Over 92–100km and 11–14 days, you sleep high and cold: Gokyo can hit -20°C overnight in late autumn and winter.

This is a high-altitude trek, so your sleeping bag and down jacket are safety equipment, not comfort items. Here's exactly what to pack.

What Sleeping Bag Do You Need for Gokyo Lakes?

At 4,790m, the cold at Gokyo is relentless once the sun drops behind the peaks.

  • Comfort rating: -15°C minimum; the lakes can reach -20°C overnight in late season
  • Type: Down mummy bag, 600+ fill power, with hood and draft collar
  • Liner: An insulated liner (e.g. Thermolite/Reactor) adds up to 8–14°C — turning a -5°C bag into a -13°C bag

Choose a high-altitude bag from our sleeping bag range.

Down Jacket for the Gokyo Ri Sunrise Climb

The Gokyo Ri ascent starts in the dark, pre-sunrise, when it is coldest. You need maximum insulation that packs small.

  • Features: Insulated hood, hip-length cut, packable into its own pocket
  • Layering: Wear over a fleece and base layer, under a windproof shell for the summit

See our down jackets rated for Everest-region cold.

Health and Altitude on the Gokyo Trek

  • Acclimatise: gain no more than 300–500m sleeping altitude per night above 3,000m
  • Pulse oximeter to monitor oxygen saturation
  • Diamox for AMS prevention (consult your doctor)
  • Insulated water bottle — water freezes above 4,000m overnight
  • Plastic bottles are banned in the Khumbu — bring a reusable bottle and purification

Altitude sickness is a serious risk on any trek above 4,000m. If you have questions about acclimatisation, see our guide on the topic and always consult a doctor before your trip.

Frequently Asked Questions

How difficult is the Gokyo Lakes trek?

Gokyo Lakes is moderately to strenuously difficult — it reaches 5,357m at Gokyo Ri and involves long days on glacial moraine. It is comparable to Everest Base Camp in altitude but quieter, with steep climbs that demand good fitness and proper acclimatisation.

Is Gokyo Lakes harder than Everest Base Camp?

They're similar in difficulty and altitude. Gokyo Ri (5,357m) is slightly lower than Kala Patthar (5,545m), but the Gokyo trail is steeper in places and crosses more glacial moraine. Linking the two via the Cho La Pass (5,420m) is significantly harder.

Can you trek to Gokyo without a guide?

Since 2023, Nepal officially requires foreign trekkers in national parks to hire a licensed guide. For a high, glaciated route like Gokyo, a guide is strongly recommended for safety regardless of the rule.

How cold is Gokyo Lakes at night?

Gokyo village (4,790m) can drop to -20°C overnight in late autumn and winter, and pre-dawn on Gokyo Ri is colder still. A -15°C comfort sleeping bag plus an insulated liner is the safe minimum.
